Having made a shambles of his country’s relationship with India, Donald Trump is in repair mode. He just nominated one of his closest aides, Sergio Gor, to be ambassador there as well as ‘special envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs’. As the old saying goes, ‘if you want to solve a problem, find a Bukharan Jew to do it’. Mr Gor (Sergey Gorokhovsky) may not be Jewish or Bukharan, but he was born nearby in Tashkent and his mother called herself an Israeli. He came to the USA by way of Malta, where he got an education from the Christian Brothers. It led to one of his first political ventures with ‘Catholics for McCain’ back in 2008. It will be interesting to see what the Indians make of this new occupant of a seat worthy of the Timurids. Talleyrand is free today.
